Ella reddened. 'I'm sorry, I didn't mean that. It's just that I would like to buy myself a few things and I haven't any money.'
'Didn't you bring any down with you?'
'I'm afraid not. My bank account is as empty as yours.'
Ella only realised how tactless the remark was when she saw Gabrielle's cheeks turn pale and then scarlet.
'If you only knew how I hate the position I am in!' The older woman jumped up and walked agitatedly round the terrace, a picture of dark, frustrated beauty. 'I was so sure things were going to change, that everything would be all right once Bertrand-----' She stood still and forced the frown from her face, running a hand across her forehead to make sure the skin was smooth. 'I am being silly and worrying for nothing. Men are difficult creatures, Ella. Like butterflies, they have to be caught with skill and delicacy.'
Ella held herself taut, hoping she was not going to hear any confidences that would embarrass her or, more important, put paid to her own foolish hopes, For they are foolish, she told herself, looking at Gabrielle's perfect features and elegant figure. How can I compete with someone so beautiful? And she is French too, as Scott's mother was.
'Please make me some coffee,' Gabrielle said, breaking the silence. 'That is all I will have.'
Throughout the day Ella was tense, expecting a call from Scott and hoping he would not make it when Gabrielle was near the phone. Yet no matter where the Frenchwoman was, she would be certain to ask who had called. What shall I say to her, Ella wondered, and what excuse can I give for leaving the house if Scott wants to see me tonight? But her worry was needless, for no call came nor any message to let her know where he was.
Anticipation gave way to disappointment and this in turn gave way to anger, not with Scott but with herself for having expected him to telephone. When he had left her last night he had made no promise to call. In fact he had made no reference whatever to seeing her again. She had seen this casualness as part of his character and had gone to bed content in the knowledge that he had enjoyed her company and would want to repeat the day. But his silence indicated loss of interest, and though she chided herself for thinking this, she could not dismiss it from her mind.
The following day Ella rushed down to collect the post, telling herself she was not looking for a letter, yet deeply disappointed when there was no mail for her. Didn't Scott want to see her again? Had all the things he said to her meant nothing to him? If so, why had he bothered to say them?
A conquest. The word came unbidden to her mind and began to undermine her new-found confidence. The conquest of a girl who had made her dislike of him obvious. It was a thing many men would enjoy, particularly a rich handsome one who was used to women fawning over him.
